A First for Malaysia: Atomic-Scale Imaging Arrives at MIMOS

How ITS Malaysia and Thermo Fisher Scientific helped MIMOS advance atomic-scale research

Some instruments do more than fill a gap in a lab, they open a new field of possibility. For MIMOS, Malaysia’s national applied research and development centre, the addition of a new electron microscope marked a new frontier: the first installation of its kind in the country, positioning MIMOS at the leading edge of atomic-scale research.

The Challenge

MIMOS has long been at the forefront of semiconductor, materials science, and advanced technology research in Malaysia. To support its next generation of atomic-scale characterisation work, spanning semiconductor research, materials science, and failure analysis, MIMOS set out to secure a system capable of imaging and analysis at a new level of precision, one that would position its Failure Analysis Laboratory (FAL) among the region’s most advanced.

The Partnership

ITS Malaysia worked alongside Thermo Fisher Scientific to bring the Thermo Scientific Spectra 300 S/TEM, Malaysia’s first 300 kV double CS Corrector transmission electron microscope, to MIMOS. The project began with close engagement between the ITS Malaysia team and MIMOS’ research group to understand their evolving requirements. Working alongside Thermo Fisher Scientific, ITS provided technical consultation, application discussions, and solution demonstrations aligned with MIMOS’ research objectives.

Throughout the evaluation and procurement process, the ITS Malaysia team maintained consistent communication with both technical users and procurement stakeholders, combining strong application expertise with responsive, on-the-ground support. This close collaboration between MIMOS, ITS, and Thermo Fisher Scientific carried the project from initial discussion through to a successful installation in December 2025.

The Installation

Following installation, MIMOS hosted a seminar, “Spectra 300 S/TEM: The Ultimate Platform for Atomic-Scale Characterisation,” showcasing the new system’s capabilities and its potential to support cutting-edge research. The seminar underscored the significance of the installation for MIMOS’ Failure Analysis Laboratory (FAL) and its broader research community, marking a new capability now available to Malaysia’s research and semiconductor ecosystem.

Why This Matters

Advanced electron microscopy is becoming increasingly important as Southeast Asia’s semiconductor and materials science sectors grow. Installations like this one at MIMOS demonstrate what close, consultative partnership between a research institution, a global technology leader, and a regional distribution partner can achieve.

For ITS Science & Medical Group, this project strengthens our presence in advanced materials characterisation and establishes a flagship reference installation, one that opens the door to similar opportunities with universities, semiconductor manufacturers, and research institutes across the region.
